Fiber Show in Steamboat Springs hosts Work of German Artist Petra Voegtle during Christmas Holiday season, Dec 2, 2005 through Jan 18, 2006
"Beyond Fibers: New Forms" at the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts at the Depot in Steamboat Springs will feature fiber art of German artist Petra Voegtle (Vyala). Voegtle's work has been displayed at numerous venues in the United States and Europe and incorporates in general not only paintings on silk, but also silk sculptures, drawings and wood carving.
Steamboat Springs, CO (Vyala-Arts), November 9, 2005 -- An international juried exhibit of work created with fiber materials or using traditional fiber processes will be a highlight of the Christmas holiday season in Steamboat Springs. The Eleanor Bliss Center for the Arts at the Depot will feature Petra Voegtle (Vyala) paintings and silk sculptures have been shown in numerous venues in the United States and Europe. Juror of the show was Alice Zrebiec, Consulting Curator of Textile Art for the Denver Art Museum. The show will be open from Dec 2, 2005 through Jan 18, 2006.
Voegtle's work shown at "Beyond Fibers: New Forms" is a fiber sculpture of bamboo. "Bamboo" belongs to a series which depicts symbols from the beautiful Hawaiian islands. The motive is widely used by artists. It is the fascination for its strength and fragility at the same time, its beauty and its secrets, its sound when the wind is moving through the leaves. http://www.angelfire.com/art2/vyala_arts/silkcarvings/bamboo.html
The piece incorporates a technique called "silk carving©," developed by the artist. The intent of this technique was to create a symbiosis between carving and fiber art. The surface of the fiber was transformed completely into a relief. The upper layer of the piece was made from one single piece of silk - the painting technique adds depth to the piece and makes the viewer believe to walk towards a bamboo forest while in fact it is only a piece of soft, sculptured silk.
Voegtle who signs her work with "Vyala" which is an old sanskrit word, feels deeply influenced by Asian cultures due to many travels to southeast Asian countries. A vyala is a mythical catlike animal that can have different faces. The vyala motif is ubiquitous in medieval Indian temples. Symbolically it represents the struggle to subdue the passions. The vyala's body is always a rampant lion sometimes engaged in some combat with a warrior or female trying to tame it. A symbol for the struggle of life, bending sometimes but not breaking - just like the bamboo.

Hoboken, New Jersey Silk Road Revisited: Painted Silk as Art - A Special Exhibition
Silk painting has evolved from second century A.D. where its ancient art form has enchanted and delighted the beholder as it has stimulated the imagination of the artist.  I have come to share my passionate love affair with this sumptuous fabric with some incredibly talented silk artists whose work will be showcased at the Annual Hoboken Studio Arts Tour.
Each artist selected for this exhibition has practiced his or her craft for over ten years.  The exhibition will represent a diverse genre of form; the art that has been produced is as diverse as the individual style and technique allows.  You will find artists who specialize in fashion wearables, an architect who excels in theatrical backdrops, another who has concentrated her efforts on prayer shawls (tallets), and four widely exhibited Russian artists who will bring the far reaches of their country to ours.  The level of expertise achieved by these artists takes many years to master.
The preciseness of the painting can be compared to that of watercolor in that it is unforgiving.   Errors cannot be covered as in oil painting, and the piece must then be restarted or evolved from this happy accident.  A talented artist can exploit this situation, as dyes on silk create such a radiance of color the imagination can hardly escape the creative process.  Thus taking the "error" in a new direction far beyond its original intention, and perhaps even more dramatic.
It has always been my ambition to exhibit this caliber of work in a serious venue.  These artists deserve to be recognized for their talents and expertise.  It is my hope that this show raises that awareness here in our country.  Silk painting will then gain its respected status as fine art.
Join us at City Hall.  We won't be hard to find just look for the vibrant pageantry of color.
