Vietnamese Watercolor on Silk
Minh Quang Phan
July 19-23, 2004 One-week session
Students will learn the art of traditional Vietnamese Silk Painting in this new workshop. In a directed lesson students will first create a landscape using watercolors, brushes, and a small piece of handwoven silk from Vietnam. They will then paint a full size (16" x 20") painting of a subject of their choice. The method of carefully dampening the silk (stretched on a wood frame), then painting, allowing the silk to dry, then dampening and overpainting, blending and layering, will create rich vibrant colors and characteristics unique to this method. The silk painting may be reworked each time the silk is moistened, until perfection is reached! Time and patience are essential to successful silk painting. Some experience in drawing and in using watercolor paints is highly recommended.
Materials: A complete materials list will be sent upon registration.
Tuition: $475
Lab Fee: $50 (includes handwoven silk from Vietnam, use of custom made frames in class. Frames will be available for purchase.)
Enrollment limited to 12 students.
